THE EARTH OF PARAGUAY IS HIS PALETTE

With the tip of his paintbrush and from deep in his palette, Sebastian Diaz reminds us that the vegetal is the primeval form of life . With a force evermore austere and luminous, all at once.

What was already present in he first works of him that l saw in Paris, some three years ago, these pomegranates ready to burst into seed, those enormous, satisfying grapefruit, as surfeited prevaricators in dreams (or nightmares, perchance?) of Botero, those apple in silent dialog ue with a guitar lacking a virtuoso, now achieve a sublime force, as if more sure of thems elves and more dominant that the artist from Concepcion now presents us at the Belmarco Gallery from Nane Beta Guasu Pora, (Asuncion, in the guarani language). This time, drawing advantage from the much larger dimensions of his paintings, like a general finding his own greatness in the enormity of great battles which give a quicker breath to his "painting mad ness", Sebastian Diaz makes us taste with our eyes moonlike melons whose missing quarter seems to have been launched to the end of space, fat mangoes gazing from their own place in the paintings as if from the balcony of royalty, humble grapefruit bent down to earth by their perceptible overload, and he dares — at last- to venture into a springless leap from vegetal to aquatic life. Keeping faith in his thirst for still life, he probes the appointed path of pictorial aegis followed, before him,

by Zurbarán, Chardin, Corot, Picasso and all the great Dutch of the Golden Age ls not his anchovy — a name that, in Spanish, has multiple meanings for a Paraguayan-, as much so as his piranha (a guarani word with universal resonance this time) suspended from a thread that may, at the same time, be a hangman's rope'? Now, it is a well known fact from the depth of the Middle Ages, that it brings good fortune to him who possesses a shred. As life always passes by the death of others, Isn't it so, Sebastian?

All ofthis, and much more, is contained in the work that is burgeoning from the most telluric of all Paraguayan painters conceived between Bahia Negra and Paso de Patria. An artist born from the clayey soil of l-lcrq ueta, close to Concepcion, which itselfgives life by head and hand, passing on from generation to generation of scuptors those humble and pure vessels that, in their time, the Guaranies crated without mechanical help, more that two thousand years ago, and that Sebastian Diaz today brings forth on his canvasses with his inspired paintbrush.

And so marking the passage from vegetal to mineral, sublimated by the great talent of a plain man.

That, to my eyes. and undoubtedly to his as well, is the sense of this singular painting titled "Guinea", in which a cordless violin converted

fora time into a simple wild plant, breaks outthrough the lock ofa prosaic grapefruit to lay a bridge between the two elements ofthe paintings, a greatGuarani Chickenwhose feet resemble roots while its beakis setto pickon the stars ofthe Southern Cross, or beyond, that of Tranquillity that embellishes the coat of arms of Paraguay, between palm and olive branches.

Amazing, Sebastian Diaz, whose name brings to mind the arrows that irnpale a martyr and his surname that ofthe greatest of l berian myths, that Cid who became more dangerous to his enemies dead that alive. Like the piranha from our painter's canvas, who can tell'?

Evidently, there is a parcel of genius in this artist, and that is offered to those who are able to discover and deserve it, That is the seed to

be seen inthe wounds of the great fruits whose sides have been opened to a future tinted with melancholy and happiness at the same time, Here, at Calle Brasil ofthe city of Asuncion, are paintings made for the lime covered walls of colonial residences and Jesuit settlements.

Doctor Jose Gaspar de Francia would have appreciated them, I feel assured , more than forthe brocaded palaces of the nouveau riche.

ln sum, they are like the most naturally beautiful women, they are sufficient into them selves Fortheir sensual purity and their savage liricism!

Just as the soil of Paraguay, which Sebastian Diaz uses as his palette feeds its fascinating beauty from the rays of a Sun all powerful and capricornian.
