VIAJE ÍNTIMO AL ITINERARIO DEL DESEO - BETSY PARTYKA (Ohio University)

AN INTIMATE JOURNEY THROUGH RENÉE FERRER'S ITINERARY OF DESIRE

BETSY PARTYKA (Ohio University)

Renée Ferrer, one of Paraguay's most prolific writers, enjoys international recognition as a poet, short story writer, and novelist. Although the 1980s and 90s witnessed her initial steps into narrative fiction, Renée Ferrer began her career as a poet at a very early age when she discovered that unspoken inner turmoil could be expressed freely in verse. This need to write has forced both painful and harmonious memories from early childhood to adulthood to continually mold her, creating an eternal recycling of inquietudes and desires. Therefore, although crafting words liberates her inner self to be reborn and thrive, it also functions as her executioner, condemning a fruitful imagination to the limits of reality's deceptions.

In Itinerary of Desire the poet examines a woman's most intimate dreams and needs in search of the meaning of desire. As the title implies the reader embarks on a sensual journey towards fulfillment, often slipping into the ebb and tide of nautical metaphors. Placid sunsets on tranquil seas, disturbing shadows along the shores, and lunar reflections contrast with raging seas, sharp precipices, and blinding light. The uncontrollable changes of Nature mirror the turbulence of the feminine poetic voice that must discover her inner strength in order to survive life's journey. The poems emphasize the ironic twists of life in which love is essential to existence, yet hardly attainable in a polarized world where egos scorn the yearnings of others.

In a poetic language often hermetic and even baroque, Itinerary of Desire explores the conflicting emotions of love/ hate, discovery/ abandonment, acceptance/ rejection, fulfillment/ loneliness, childlike innocence/ cynical maturity Renée Ferrer expresses the most intimate feelings and obstacles a woman must face in order to fill her own emptiness and come to terms with her intimate self. Although the collection itself boasts no simple thematic divisions or obvious patterns, there appear to be four stages of development on the journey to fulfillment, sensual or psychological: the constant return to a feeling of abandonment, the search to physically fill this void, the creation of erotic dreams to arrive at satisfaction, and finally a return to the center in search of a new meaning to life with the magic of words.

The poem "My Shadow" which appears in the middle of the collection, and ironically is not of an erotic nature, serves as a point of departure to understanding the initial void in the narrator's journey. Here a feeling of abandonment scars the narrator early in life yet molds her future sensitivities: "a farewell/ that has already taken me by the hand/ a ship unfolding/ the gangway of distance,/ the embrace that refuses to let go,/ - I no longer remember." Yet, she does remember "an inventory of absences" that devaluates her as a person, and as a woman, returning her to the embryonic stages of development.

To fill the void, the poetic voice begins the long and unsuccessful search for physical satisfaction in an anonymous "you". He consistently leaves her unsatisfied as he nonchalantly turns his back, forcing her to recoil into her childhood memories of loneliness. The poet plays with linguistic ambiguities juxtaposing sensual images of a lover with the tender kiss of a mother, both ending in neglect: "From whose arms enamored of apathy/ set sail my tender hand,/ the compass lost in embraces/ confined to shore? And the shower/ of kisses of which I so naively boast,/ if I stole the destination of her touch?" ("Abandonment"). In "Disillusionment" this same voice recalls how her love decorated her with necklaces and earrings of passion and hope only to strip her of everything, leaving only the shell of a woman, "a barefoot beggar". This abandonment returns her to the emotional shores of childhood and her first void: "Sandals of lost encounters:/ I left them on the beach/ where in salt I bathed my face/ and abandoned my masquerade."

The poem "No One Will Come for Me" reflects a magnified feeling of neglect capable of causing depression and destruction. Here the "I" closes in on herself so intensely she begins to disappear while she questions her reason for being. Her deceitful love leaves her abandoned, with no protection, feeling vulnerable and unable to affirm per own existence: "and I know/ that being no one/ I need not wait,/ for no one will come for me."

Lost in childhood and hesitant in adulthood, the protagonist of these poems must find a way to de-fine herself or perish. Repeatedly she is disappointed during this stage of her emotional development and feels trapped behind menacing walls: "Above me/ gray/walls of silente/ rectangles of ash/vertical tombstones gathered in a circle/ in the middle/ a chair where my body trembles" ("Doors"). She tries to escape this dead and, but the "you", her supposed salvation, fails to respond to per calls. She gives herself up to abandonment once more, yet expresses a slight curiosity which may not be total submission: "Loneliness is a present with no return/ stranded in the echoes silenced by closed doors/ I approach/ and ponder." The feeling of entrapment also prevails in "Condemned," but here words begin to weave their magic. She speaks of new desires that leave per unrecognizable to herself and her loved ones. She is sieged with sterility and buries herself in words as a last recourse: "I am a ship/ rudder aground facing the precipite/ over which 1 hurl my words,/ a prisoner of faded walls/ menaced by a sterile gala."

Not finding a physical body that will satisfy per growing needs, her desire intensifies and turns inward converted into erotic dreams in which her love lacks physical and intellectual attributes. In this third step the poems become more dramatically sensual as they concentrate on the woman as a self-sufficient, independent and strong being. Although the opaque presence of the "you" persists, he becomes more transparent as the female voice discovers she can live without him, especially when he cannot satisfy her sexually: "when the drumroll dies/ in your vanquished throat/ from my hand reborn/ utter joy will burst" ("I don't Care"). Nirvana erupts from her own body as she begins the road to understanding per self. Now the poet personifies desire as "a flower that sings aloud.../ The world/ the universe,/ too small to restrain it" ("Dream"). The danger of returning to the void lessens perceptibly. Self-gratification allows the poetic voice to splinter the vivid image of a masculine "you" which, up to this point in her life, has controlled per very essence. As she develops her own identity she rejects the flotsam of 'him.' and contemplates per own passions: "your memory is shipwrecked in my eyes" ("Ship-wrecked").

The journey to self-discovery continues in "Breathing" as the poetic voice yields to desire without anger or frenzy, but with the confidence of total satisfaction found in an erotic dream: "I imagine you inside me,/ your flesh molded to my pleasure,/ covering me with your voice./ .../ Filled with you,/ I slowly exhale the debris,/ the resentment,/ the spiders/ unraveling webs of whimsical history" Although the now transparent "you" is still part of her subconscious dream state, at the end of the poem the voice finally begins to exercise her rational side as she slowly leaves her sensitivities behind: "I let you go,/ I let you go,/ because/ breathing is unconscious,/ a reflex,/ blessed at times:/ pendulum between life and death."

As she enters the final stage to ultimate fulfillment, the spiritual "I" looks for alternatives to stimulate her sensitivity. In the poems "Air" and "Earth" she joins with nature and finds release from the torments of her passion. Like a mystical experience, the air cleans her wounds ("Air"), and she feels herself "fall exhausted to the pulse of the earth,/ my thirst abates with her rebirth" ("Earth"). Throughout her journey the poetic voice slowly adjusts to her own person, her body, her face, her age, her passion. She ponders the foolishness of her youth: "Delirious with love and submission/ -I remember-/ absurdly insistent on hope" ("The Attempt"), while she re-evaluates her life, preparing herself for what lies ahead. "Today I begin the return to my center;/ I watch as I retrace the steps of time;/ arduous journey into my before,/ no log to guide me." She accepts herself, embraces the world from a different, independent, free perspective, leaving the "you" behind, conquering the need to love. But the journey is arduous and the itinerary demanding. She has had to strip herself and her words to the bone in order to 'be' once again: "Torn to pieces I will enter/ the radiance of knowing my self" ("Self Awareness"). In "The Walk" she contemplates her life, facing her loneliness, passions and identity while she walks along the shores of childhood: "My tangles of lost encounters/ I wish to free in rolling surf/ searching for my center/ stir up deep down inside/ this passion that consumes me."

To end this brief analysis, we recapitulate the progression of emotional development found throughout these poems. The poetic voice embarks on a sensual and spiritual journey to reaffirm herself and deaden the persistent pain of abandonment. Not only the loneliness that comes from memories, but the abandonment that a woman feels when her body begins to prepare itself for maturity and must leave an empty shell behind. She looks to fill the multidimensional emptiness with her sexual appeal to another. When this fails, she creates erotic dreams to ensure physical sexual satisfaction. But only a return to her soul, to her non-sexual center, will suffice. Renée Ferrer has captured the essence of change in these poems in her intimate study of how passion is born from a void, grows to unattainable heights, and is satiated finally by filling the spiritual hollowness with self-awareness.

  NOTE FROM THE TRANSLATOR

ILINERARY OF DESIRE, first published in 1994, is a collection of erotic poetry which includes 75 poems written between 1993 and 1994. Dissatisfied with general loose interpretations of the term "erotic" and disappointed with much of what she had read under that rubric, Ferrer was determined to write a collection of deeply erotic poetry that would stimulate the senses using poignant metaphors and incongruent lexicon with no suggestion of pornography. The result is this harmonious collection of poems whose language, rhymes and rhythms reflect the poets intimate long-standing relationship with words. In 1996 at the presentation of the Portuguese/ Spanish bilingual edition of this collection, Ferrer first asked me to consider translating Itinerario to English. In 2000 I accepted the challenge and am now happy to share our work with the English speaking public.

Although by nature much is lost in translation, I have tried to conserve the overall tone of each poem and the beauty of Ferrer's carefully chosen words, while creating a pleasant cadence which avoids forced rhyme or rhythmic patterns. Constant consultation with Ferrer during the translation process has insured interpretations acceptable to us both. One of the biggest obstacles of translating from a Romance language into a Germanic one has been to maintain the syntactical ambiguities of the original Spanish in order to preserve the intrigue of the collection. At times, due to the structure of English, I have had to add gender where the original poem was more sexually ambiguous. Where there was some confusion Ferrer was able to supply clarification.

This bilingual edition of Itinerary of Desire, translated into English for the first time, allows the new reader of  Ferrer's poetry to enter into her complex world of metaphor and sensuality in English, while following the original text. It is our desire that the reader consult the original verses and contemplate the proposed translations in order to enjoy the infinite possibilities to the reading of this poetry.

Difficult decisions had to be made and many drafts processed before I felt satisfied with the end product. Even now I find other possible translations to the graceful turns of the Spanish language which Ferrer so lovingly manicured. Itinerary of Desire is a journey of wishes and yearnings that constantly transform and regenerate as the text grows with the reader and the reader with it. We hope this edition will encourage the translation of more contemporary Paraguayan literature into English and create a wider readership.

  SUEÑO

He soñado que alguien ponía la lengua

en el hueco de tu boca,

corredor por donde transita el deseo.

El deseo es una flor que canta.

Desde su pedestal alabastrino

hasta su sonrosado capitel

                                        crece el deseo.

El mundo,

            el universo,

son demasiado pequeños para contenerlo.

Nada es tan luminoso como él,

nada tan nítido

                     y vacilante,

nada tan contenido

                    y desbordado.

De pronto ese alguien

                    tiene mi rostro.

1991

DREAM

I dreamt that someone was thrusting her tongue

into the hollows of your mouth,

a ravine where desire abounds.

Desire, a flower that sings aloud.

From its alabaster pedestal

to its lush pink capital desire grows.

The world,

                 the universe,

too small to restrain it.

Nothing is so brilliant,

nothing so pure,

                        and uncertain,

nothing so constrained

                        and profuse.

Suddenly that someone

                        has my face.

ABATIMIENTO

Apura la copa de la indiferencia,

la herrumbre del distanciamiento,

y recluida en tu cuerpo

déjate ir hacia tu primitivo ser;

sorbe de a poco la orfandad

que te trajina.

Qué banquete de aterido corazón.

Con la propia impotencia

límpiate las babas

de la araña pertinaz que te acorrala,

y suéltate:

ya no trates,

             no eres nadie.

XII-1991

DESPAIR

Drain the goblet of indifference,

the rust of distance,

and reclusive in your body

return to your primitive self;

slowly sip the loneliness

that hastens you along.

What a feast of frozen hearts.

With your own impotence

wipe away the secretions

of the persistent spider that has you trapped,

and free yourself:

give up,

           you are no one.

CONDENA

Húmeda y germinada en el deseo,

extraña ante un perfil que desconozco,

cierro puertas,

clausuro el país de la fiebre.

Las personas que amo me ven partir;

se quedan con mi cáscara baldía.

Soy un navío

con el timón varado frente al risco

desde donde despeño la palabra,

prisionera de muros caducos

que asedia un vendaval estéril.

Detrás del empellón del pensamiento

se yerma mi surco de ternura.

Soy un mármol que niega

el beso elemental,

el dulce instante,

prodigando alabanzas

al verbo:

            mi verdugo.

1992

CONDEMNED

Damp and thriving in desire,

stranger to a profile I do not know,

I close doors,

insulating the country from my fever.

Loved ones watch me part;

my empty shell left in their hands.

I am a ship

rudder aground facing the precipice

over which I hurl my words,

a prisoner of faded walls

menaced by a sterile gale.

Behind the surge of thoughts

my furrows of tenderness lie barren.

I am marble, refusing

the most simple of kisses,

the sweetest of moments,

lavishing praise

on the word:

                  my executioner.

AUTOCONOCIMIENTO

tus carencias;

Me iré dejando ir,

suelta de entrega,

absuelta de abandono y maniatada, por fin,

la incongruencia.

La trenza del agobio desatada,

y los brazos creciéndome

hasta el designio absurdo de quererte.

Envolveré la luz,

el mar,

la tierra,

tal vez una galaxia donde quede

un avaro retal de tu silencio.

Desmenuzada ingresaré

en la luminosidad de conocerme.

1992

SELF-AWARENESS

Stripped of reticence,

unwarily bathed in the light bestowed by the stars;

under my eyelids the salt of my deficiencies,

your deficiencies;

somewhere the empty tunic of my body,

my shadow

with its breasts clasped in the fingers of the wind.

All alone and new,

bearing my worn-down thirst,

I will penetrate your waves,

wise and slow.

A trembling quelled in the sails of my heart,

and my passage prolonged in your memory.

I will submerge myself in cold transparency

crowned with freedom and song.

I will let myself go,

released from surrender,

absolved of abandonment and, at last, shackled

the incongruities.

The plaits of oppression undone,

my arms extending

with foolish intentions of loving you.

I will envelop the light,

the earth,

the sea,

perhaps a galaxy where lies

a meager remnant of your silence.

Torn to pieces I will enter

the radiance of knowing my self.

PARTIDA

Verte

lejano

risa antigua esparcida:

residuos de una cremación compasiva;

hojas congregándose en un concilio de sombra,

el polen instituyendo la germinación

de primaveras futuras:

las primaveras que no te verán,

porque

oh para siempre

te estás yendo.

13-VI--93

DEPARTURE

Seeing you

faraway

forever,

forever in the sighs of the pastures

bent by the breeze.

Seeing you depart

through the drone of the bumblebee

before a scorching sun,

your shadow filled with fireflies

floating in tremulous incandescence.

My body languid on the breath of the earth,

shadowed by your receding light

-butterfly of innumerable moons-

watching you diminish

along the path of absence.

Flowers ceding to the wind,

an old laugh dispersed:

remains of compassionate cremation;

leaves gathering in a council of shade

polen inaugurating the germination

of springs to come:

springs that will never see you,

because

oh, forever,

you are leaving.

INSULTO

Se desliza de mis dedos la harina de las estrellas;

XI-1993

INSULT

From my eyes welled disconsolate springs.

Your words implacably penetrated like daggers.

The lamp in my room, a tenuous nocturnal embrace,

protects me in its lap of healing light.

How can a voice change to steel

charging and breaking the pulse with such timing?

What nuances of scorn grow on your lips

putting its hilt on the blade of your smile.

Stardust slips through my fingers;

caresses mount in me and I know not what to do.

MÚSICA DENTRO DE TU CUERPO

Escucho dentro de tu cuerpo una nota que se obstina;

Con su garganta de cristal despeja la niebla que anochece en tu frente;

Oigo tus arterias demorándose en un solo de ternura;

escoltando el banderín de mi impaciencia;

Busca la nota en tu cuerpo, búscala: es de luz;

dentro de tu fragua presiento un tumulto de golondrinas dichosas;

MUSIC WITHIN YOUR BODY

I hear within your body a sustaining note;

a lark ascends the scaffolding of time, a time

that lives in you and flounshes in your pulse. Don’t you hear it?

With its crystal throat it dispels the fog that darkens your brow;

its song rises towards your thoughts, abounds in your arms, multiplies,

drawing you to the islands of my kisses.

I hear your arteries prolonged in a solo of tenderness;

lost behind my melancholy the same note repeats from the heavenliness of your eyes.

As if to say here I am, a melody like a trapeze artist traverses your eyes heightening my joy,

and from your heart, my love, its arpeggios unearth my mysteries.

The note is a tiny key that tinkles in your hands, ushering in the pennant of my impatience; basking beside the flame, I am awash in glorious choruses,

your lips on the flame, chords on my mouth.

Seek the note in your body, seek it: it is made of light;

in your foundry I see a flurry of joyous swallows;

in your muscles resounds music of the universe,

and I yield to the dictates of desire.

INSOMNIO

INSOMNIA

From the vast territory of insomnia,

from its endless shadowed moor,

I bear dangling threads of absence between my lips,

a trail of footprints overcomes me and calls your name.

In what heights of fever and delirium

do I traverse the foothills of dawn,

imploring, pining, yearning

unraveling the weaving of the hours?

As I am about to touch you, the flame of your voice

becomes a void. Like leaves in

a sudden belated whirlwind

your ghost dislodges my sleep.

The majestic morning star startles me

forming your caresses with my hands.
