MARITÉ ZALDÍVAR of today arises from a colonial process which is not yet regarded as finished. As far as the typical colonization of modern times, including that from Spain starting in the 16th century, it seems to have had common objectives, similar ruling structures and followed parallel historical processes. At the same time some special forms could be distinguished, owing less to the actions of the colonists than to the personality of those they tried to colonize. The colonial historical process can be categorized in different ways, precisely by the type of contact amongst two or more peoples and the resulting effects. Depending on the ideology used to consider them, historical processes and their results certainly acquire different meanings.
